The Most Popular FAQs:

1. What is the date of the 2010 Boston Marathon?

The 2010 Boston Marathon will be held on Monday, April 19.

2. What do I do if I cannot participate once I have registered?

Unfortunately numbers are non-transferable and entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. You may not give your number to someone else.

If you qualified after September 26, 2009, you do not need to request a deferment of your qualifying time. You may simply re-use this same qualifying time to register for the 2011 Boston Marathon. Registration for that race will begin in September, 2010 via our web site.

If your qualifying race was between September 27, 2008 and September 26, 2009, and you are no longer able to participate in the 2010 Boston Marathon, you may defer your time to 2011, provided that you:

  • notify us in writing no later than April 19, 2010 by
returning your number pick-up card with an explanation to:
B.A.A.
One Ash Street
Hopkinton, MA
01748-1897

OR:

  • return your number pick-up card in person during number pick-up hours on race weekend. First pick up your bib number, chip, runner's shirt and bag, then return your bib number and timing chip to the Solution Center in the number pick-up area at the John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo.
A specially marked application for 2011 will then be mailed to you in October 2010 (a 2011
entry fee will be required).

3. I used my qualifying time from a fall marathon in 2009 to enter the 2010 Boston Marathon. Can I use the same time again for the 2011 Boston or do I need another qualifier?

Qualifying for the 2011 Boston Marathon began September 26, 2009, so if you ran a fall marathon on that date or later your time can be used to qualify for the Boston Marathon 2011, even if you run in 2010.

4. What do you anticipate the cut-off time will be between being assigned to Wave 1 or Wave 2?

In 2009, the cut-off time between waves was 3:34:36. Runners will be notified of their assigned wave in early April when Number Pick-Up Cards are issued.

5. What are the location and hours for the Expo and Number Pick Up?

The John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo and Number Pick-Up will be held at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, on Friday, April 16 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Please note that bib numbers will NOT be distributed on race day. Your travel arrangements should take into account picking up your number by 6:00 p.m. on April 18.

6. Are headphones permitted?

Although the B.A.A. discourages the use of iPods and headphones, they are allowed except for those athletes eligible for prize money.

7. Can I run the race as an unofficial or "bandit" runner?

No, please do not run if you have not officially entered in the race. Race amenities along the course and at the finish, such as fluids, medical care, and traffic safety, are provided based on the number of official entrants. Any addition to this by way of unofficial participants, adversely affects our ability to ensure a safe race for everyone.

8. What is the first day I can qualify for the 2011 Boston Marathon?

The qualifying window for the 2011 Boston Marathon began on September 26, 2009. Registration for the 2011 Boston Marathon is scheduled to begin in September, 2010 and is expected to fill quickly. Registration for the 2010 Boston Marathon opened on September 9, 2009 and closed on November 13, 2009.

9. How do I know if a marathon is run on a certified course?

The race director or race management can tell you if a course is certified.

For a complete list of certified courses in the U.S.A. check USA Track & Field. In Canada check Athletics Canada. Internationally, an extensive calendar of races is listed at the Association of International Marathon and Road Races website, with indication of courses that are not certified.

I will be 44 when I run my qualifying race, but will be 45 when I run Boston. What is my qualifying time?

Your qualifying time is based on your age on the day of the Boston Marathon, thus your qualifying time will be 3hrs 30 min – and you can be 44 when you run your qualifying race.
