Dr. Michael P. O'Leary - President

Dr. Michael P. O’Leary is the 24th President of the Boston Athletic Association.

Born in Framingham, Massachusetts, along the Boston Marathon route, O’Leary grew up near the seven-mile mark of the Hopkinton-to-Boston course. His father, a lifelong B.A.A. member, was a well-known Boston College runner who later became a surgeon and was B.A.A. President Walter Brown’s personal physician. O’Leary started attending the Boston Marathon in his very early years, when his father would perform medical check-ups on runners before they were allowed to start the race.

O’Leary ran cross country and track at Harvard University, where he graduated with honors. After two additional years of study in Europe, he attended George Washington University and received his MD. O’Leary then received a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. He completed his residency in urologic surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and his fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, and Stanford University.

O’Leary is currently a tenured Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Senior Urologic Surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, where he is also Director of Men’s Health. He has been named to Castle Connolly’s List of Top Doctors in the United States for over a decade, and he is a member of several prestigious organizations including the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons. In addition, O’Leary has published over 200 articles.

O’Leary also has an extensive volunteer background. He has made annual trips to Bermuda and Navajo Reservations in New Mexico to provide health care and screenings to those who may not have access to, or are unable to afford, proper medical coverage.

A member of the B.A.A. since 1989, O’Leary has held a position on the Board of Governors for the last 12 years. Elected at the 2017 B.A.A. Annual Meeting, O’Leary succeeded Joann Flaminio as President.

As a B.A.A. Governor, O’Leary served as a representative of the organization at the Ohme Hochi Road Race in Japan in 2017. The Ohme Hochi Road Race is the sister race of the Boston Marathon.

O’Leary lives in Dedham, Massachusetts, along with his wife Dr. Kathleen Welch, who also practices at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The pair have two children, Jackie, 27, and James, 22.
