Only officially registered participants are allowed on the course. The course and finish area facilities close six hours after the last runner crosses the starting line. The Boston Marathon does not have a race walk division.

Registration for the Boston Marathon typically opens in early September, approximately seven months before the race. The B.A.A. uses a process to register runners which allows the fastest qualifiers in their gender and age group to register first.

The Boston Marathon starting line is located in Hopkinton at the Doughboy statue on East Main Street (near Ash Street). The race finishes on Boylston Street in Boston, directly in front of the Boston Public Library (700 Boylston Street).

All prize money winners will be decided by gun time. All age group division awards will be awarded by net time.

Poland Spring Water and Gatorade Endurance Formula are the official fluids provided approximately every mile along the course as well as the start and finish areas.

No headquarters hotel has been designated for participants, but participants may find it convenient to stay in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood, which is where the race finishes.
