The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced an elite field of Olympic Games and IAAF World Championships medalists and returning champions for the 2014 B.A.A. 5K, to be held on Saturday, April 19, two days prior to the 2014 Boston Marathon®. The 2014 B.A.A. 5K will have a field size of 10,000 entrants and will start and finish at Boston Common. The race is sold out. A prize purse of $39,900 (USD) will be awarded equally to the top male and female finishers. In addition, professional runners are eligible for a $5,000 (USD) bonus for event record times established at the B.A.A. 5K. Bonus incentives will also be available for professional runners for multiple top finishes at B.A.A. events in 2014.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced an elite field of Olympic Games medalists, returning champions, and world class competitors for the 2014 B.A.A. Invitational Mile, to be held on Saturday, April 19, two days prior to the 2014 Boston Marathon®. Defending champion Nick Willis (NZL), a silver medalist at 1500 meters in the 2008 Olympic Games, highlights the men’s field. Two-time B.A.A. Invitational Mile champion (2010, 2012) and 2012 Olympian Morgan Uceny (Boston, MA) will look to win a third title. The B.A.A. Invitational Mile will also include Middle School 1,000 meter races and Scholastic Mile races, featuring youths from the eight cities and towns of the Boston Marathon course.

As the City of Boston prepares for millions of visitors over the next week culminating in the 118th Boston Marathon, city officials today released detailed public safety plans for Boston's approximately 2 miles of marathon route. Teams of leaders in government and the private sector have worked for months to develop these plans to ensure a safe and successful series of events.

The 118th Boston Marathon® on Monday, April 21, 2014, and surrounding Marathon-related events including the John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo and the B.A.A. 5K, will bring an estimated $175.8 million (USD) in spending impact to the Greater Boston region, the highest-ever Boston Marathon spending impact, according to Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau (GBCVB) President and CEO, Patrick Moscaritolo. Held annually on Patriots’ Day, the Boston Marathon is the world’s oldest annual marathon and ranks as one of the world’s most prestigious road racing events. The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) has managed and organized the Boston Marathon since the event’s inception in 1897.

With less than two weeks until the 118th Boston Marathon® on Monday, April 21, 2014, the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) outlined changes to this year’s event. As it has since its inception in 1897, the Boston Marathon will be held on Patriots’ Day, a civic holiday commemorating the Battles of Lexington and Concord. For the 29th consecutive year, John Hancock Financial Services is the principal sponsor of the Boston Marathon, the world’s oldest annual marathon. Participants will follow the historic 26.2-mile course, which starts on Main Street in rural Hopkinton and finishes on Boylston Street in Boston’s Back Bay. This year’s race will see changes in some areas for participants, spectators, and the public.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced that several former champions of the Boston Marathon® will return to participate in events surrounding the 118th Boston Marathon, to be held on Monday, April 21, 2014. Champions Joan Benoit Samuelson (ME; 1979, 1983), Amby Burfoot (CT; 1968), and Gelindo Bordin (ITA; 1990) will join 36,000 entrants in this year’s running of the world’s oldest annual marathon.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced that defending push rim wheelchair division champions Tatyana McFadden (USA) and Hiroyuki Yamamoto (JPN) will compete in the 2014 Boston Marathon® on Monday, April 21. McFadden and Yamamoto will lead a field size of 63 athletes that also includes past Boston Marathon champions, world champions, Paralympic champions, and world record holders. For the 29th consecutive year, principal sponsor John Hancock Financial Services will provide the prize purse for the race. The men’s and women’s champion will each win $15,000 (USD) in prize money. The wheelchair division awards a total of $60,000 (USD) in 2014.

On Saturday, April 19, 2014, the Boston Athletic Association will support local blindness organizations - National Braille Press, Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Perkins, and The Carroll Center for the Blind - by hosting the third annual blindfold challenge within its B.A.A. 5K.

John Hancock Financial today announced John Hancock Elite Athlete Team changes for the 118th running of the Boston Marathon on April 21, 2014. Additions to the elite men’s field include U.S. Olympians Ryan Hall and Abdi Abdirahman and Kenyan elite Mathew Bowen. Withdrawals to the elite men’s field include Kenyan elite Moses Mosop, U.S. Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein and Australian Olympian Jeffrey Hunt.

1920 - Ashland Start

The Boston Marathon began in Ashland, Massachusetts from 1897 through 1923 then moved to Hopkinton for the 1924 race.  Since then, the race has started in Hopkinton every year.
