If Anna Pierce looks familiar but you can’t quite place the name, rest easy: your memory is fine. When she last ran the BAA Invitational Mile, in 2009 – becoming the first-ever champion of the race, in its inaugural year – she was Anna Willard.

“The spending impact of the 115th Boston Marathon is the equivalent to our region hosting the NCAA Final Four. The races begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. with the Middle School 1K, following the B.A.A. 5K. The Scholastic Invitational Mile starts at approximately 9:45. The field lists for both events are listed below.

Samuelson won the 1979 Boston Marathon in an American Record time of 2:35:15, and she established a world record at the 1983 Boston Marathon in 2:22:43. Her performance from 1983 remains the fourth fastest time in Boston Marathon history.

“Boston is special race for me,” said Samuelson.  “The crowds know and appreciate the athletes competing and their accomplishments, and they never disappoint with their encouragement and enthusiasm. I look forward to experiencing their energy and excitement on Patriots’ Day.”

With three past champions and most of the top finishers from 2009 and 2010 coming back, the women’s field for the 115th Boston Marathon is one of the deepest, fastest and most experienced in the race’s history.

All of the top, professional athletes are part of principal sponsor John Hancock Financial’s Elite Athlete program and part of John Hancock’s extensive support of the Boston Marathon.

Several former champions of the Boston Marathon will be returning to Boston and participating in the events surrounding the 115th running of the world’s oldest annual marathon on April 18, 2011.

Former winners Ron Hill of Great Britain (1970), Alvaro Mejia of Colombia (1971), Rob de Castella of Australia (1986), and Jean Driscoll of the USA (1990-96, 2000) will be honored at the annual Champions’ Breakfast on Saturday, April 16.

George J. Martin, of Westborough, formerly of Framingham, passed away peacefully on March 24 surrounded by his family.  A native and lifelong resident of Massachusetts, he was the husband to the late Louise (Judge) Martin for 55 years, residing in Framingham for 40 years and later Westborough for 15 years.
