The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) announced today that four noteworthy distance runners with ties to Boston will compete among the world’s best at the second annual B.A.A. 10K on Sunday, June 24. The race will start and finish on Charles Street between the Public Garden and historic Boston Common. A partial list of the top athletes entered in the race is attached to this release.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced that Geoffrey Mutai, the world’s fastest marathoner, will defend his title at the second annual B.A.A. 10K on Sunday, June 24. Defending B.A.A. 10K champion, Caroline Kilel will square off with reigning Boston Marathon champion Sharon Cherop. The race starts and finishes on Charles Street between the Public Garden and historic Boston Common. A partial list of elite athlete biographies is attached to this release.

The Boston Chapter of Links, Incorporated (The Links) embarks on a three year commitment with the Martin Luther King Jr. K-8 school in Dorchester, MA to provide an overall health and wellness program.

In 2011, Geoffrey Mutai blistered the Boston course in an epoch-defining 2:03:02. For this year’s race, the course was simply blistering. At 10am, when the elite men’s field was all set to go, the temperature on the Hopkinton starting line was 79.2 degrees. At the half way mark it had inched above 82. By the finishing line it was 84.8. Last year, it was all about the hot pace. This year it was just plain hot.

Last year, when Desiree Davila and Caroline Kilel slung themselves around the corner onto Hereford Street toward the homestretch of the 115th Boston Marathon, Cherop got caught flat-footed because she didn’t realize how close they all were to the finish. Although the trio combined to produce the closest 1-2-3 women’s finish in Boston Marathon history—six seconds—they were a long six seconds for Cherop.

A small field of elite milers - just five - lined up in near perfect conditions to contest the fourth annual B.A.A. Men’s Elite Mile. Defending champion, Andy Baddeley from Great Britain, was not among them; but, even so - with such weather and such a tightly knit field - sparks were certain to fly.

Morgan Uceny, ranked #1 in the world, on Sunday became the first two-time winner of the women’s B.A.A. Invitational Mile, leaving behind her three rivals on the final lap for victory in 4:43.8.

A 60 degree morning with light winds meant that the scene was set for some fast running at the fourth annual B.A.A. 5K, held the day before the 116th annual Boston Marathon. With the celebrated Marathon finish line as the backdrop - and serving also as the finish line for this race - there was anticipation aplenty that this year’s men’s race would be as thrilling as it had been 12 months previously.
