As runners assembled in Hopkinton for the 121st running of the Boston Marathon, it was the weather as much as the competition that was the focus of greatest conjecture. As the elite men toed the starting line, the mercury in Hopkinton hovered close to 65F with hardly a cloud in the sky.

Three days before the 121st Boston Marathon, Edna Kiplagat’s plan was to make a move in the last 5K of the race, not before. Plans change. With a little more than 10K to go, the 37-year-old two-time IAAF World Champion was feeling good, so she threw in a 5:02 mile in the midst of the Newton Hills. “I tried to work extra hard,” she said of the monster surge. “It worked for me.”

A tailwind and warm, dry weather, along with a world-class field, helped set the stage for fast times in the push rim wheelchair division at the 121st Boston Marathon. Swiss athletes stole the show with course records and world best times in both the men’s and women’s races. Marcel Hug took the men’s title in 1:18:04, 21 seconds faster than the previous course record and world best set by Canadian Joshua Cassidy in 2012. Manuela Schar shattered the 2011 course record set by five-time Boston victor Wakako Tsuchida by more than five minutes, crossing the line in 1:28:17. While Hug shared the limelight with co-star Ernst Van Dyk, who finished second in the same time as Hug, Schar was literally the leading lady for the duration.

Some people call them “the Marathon’s Miles.” It’s an indicator of how the legendary Boston Marathon overarches everything that happens on Patriot’s Day Weekend. But, the B.A.A. Invitational Mile, to call the event by its correct name, is its own distinct entity, indeed its own distinct occasion, replete with its own competitors who can burn asphalt.

Under a cloudless blue sky “on the most gorgeous day ever,” Nicole Sifuentes was asked how she felt. “Terrible,” she said.

Close to 10,000 runners assembled on Boston Common for the annual B.A.A. 5K. What had threatened to be a chilly, blustery day, as had been the case 12 months previously, evolved to be a perfect day for running with temperatures in the mid-50s and minimal winds. Now nine years old, the BAA 5K has, along with the BAA Invitational Miles, become an integral part of Marathon Weekend, complementing beautifully the iconic 26.2 miler.

Since 2014, Molly Huddle has owned the B.A.A. 5K, winning three years in a row and setting an American record in 2015. So when she went through the first mile of this flat-and-fast course in 4:46, leading the field, no one was surprised—not even Huddle.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced that a contribution of $20,000 will be donated to the construction of Martin’s Park at Children’s Wharf in honor of Martin W. Richard. The B.A.A., along with John Hancock Financial and the Producers of BOSTON, the first feature-length documentary chronicling the Boston Marathon, have pledged to support Martin’s Park, a universally accessible park and playground along the Fort Point Channel in South Boston.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.), organizers of the Boston Marathon, is taking action to demonstrate its commitment to the participation and recognition of athletes with disabilities competing in the handcycle program in the Boston Marathon. Working with representatives of Achilles International and athletes who participate in the field, and responding to their concerns, the B.A.A. will implement changes to the handcycle program for the 121st Boston Marathon, which will be held on Monday, April 17, 2017.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) announced today that the top men’s and women’s finishers of the 1967 Boston Marathon, Dave McKenzie and Roberta ‘Bobbi’ Gibb, will be Co-Grand Marshals of the 2017 Boston Marathon® on Monday, April 17. The Boston Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in the world, and is traditionally held on Patriots’ Day in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
