The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) announced today that several champions of the Boston Marathon® will return to participate in events surrounding the 119th Boston Marathon, to be held on Monday, April 20, 2015. Champions Lisa Rainsberger (USA, 1985), Gelindo Bordin (ITA, 1990), Joan Samuelson (USA, 1979 and 1983), and Amby Burfoot (USA, 1968) will join 30,000 entrants in this year’s running of the world’s oldest annual marathon.

Boston, host to the greatest road race in the world, is a runner’s town. Until now, there’s been no place to buy your gear, learn from elite athletes, lace up for a run and clean up afterwards. Today adidas and the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.), organizer of the Boston Marathon, announce the launch of the Boston Marathon® RunBase in partnership with Marathon Sports, Inc. The adidas exclusive community experience will open mid-April just steps from the finish line. The initiative is the first of its kind in the U.S. and will be the center of running in Boston, located at the 26-mile mark of the legendary course on Boylston Street.

Universal Sports Network, the exclusive national television and digital media home of the Boston Marathon, announced today television and online coverage plans for the 119th Boston Marathon which will take place on Monday, April 20. LIVE race day coverage from Copley Square begins at 8:30 a.m. ET and includes pre- and post-race shows followed by a wrap-up show at 4 p.m. ET. Network coverage also includes a preview show on Sunday, April 19 at 4 p.m. ET LIVE from the finish line on Boylston Street.

Abbott World Marathon Majors (AWMM) is working in partnership with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) to finance increased out-of-competition drug testing for elite athletes participating in AWMM events. This is the largest anti-doping effort to date by a private athletic organization and will begin this summer.

The ninth running of the Tokyo Marathon on Feb. 22, 2015 marks the official start of Abbott’s title sponsorship of the Abbott World Marathon Majors (AWMM) and a number of key changes to the iconic series. Announced today by the organizers of the six marathons in the global race series, the champions of the AWMM will now be determined through a new one-­year cycle of Qualifying Races featuring unprecedented anti­doping protocols.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) announced today the beginning of a partnership with Italian coffee roaster Lavazza to become the Official Coffee of the Boston Marathon.

BOSTON – The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) announced that registration for the 2015 B.A.A. 5K has closed after its 10,000 entrant field size limit was reached. The B.A.A. 5K will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015, two days prior to the Boston Marathon® and will be the first event of the 2015 B.A.A. Distance Medley. Registration opened on Wednesday, February 4 at 10:00 a.m. ET and closed on Friday, February 13 at 3:00 p.m. ET.

The Boston Athletic Association had a very successfully day of racing on Saturday, competing well at both the USA Cross Country Championships and the Boston Indoor Grand Prix. At the USA Cross Country Championships in Boulder, Colorado, B.A.A. team members Jen Rhines and Elaina Balouris both qualified to represent Team USA at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Guiyang, China, on March 28.

After a hearing held on January 15, 2015 by Athletics Kenya in Nairobi and learning today of the decision to issue a two year ban against Rita Jeptoo following a failed drug test conducted in September 2014, the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) will now evaluate the effect of the results of that hearing and penalty on Ms. Jeptoo’s results at the Boston Marathon. The B.A.A. is the event organizer for the Boston Marathon.

1935 John A. Kelley

Born in West Medford, Massachusetts as one of ten children, Kelley ran track and cross-country at Arlington High School in Massachusetts. He did not finish his first Boston Marathon in 1928, but eventually competed in a record 61 Boston Marathons. A legend of the marathon, Kelley won the 1935 and 1945 runnings of the Boston Marathon. He finished in second place at Boston a record seven times. Between 1934 to 1950, he finished in the top five 15 times at Boston, consistently running in the 2:30s. He ran his last full marathon at Boston in 1992 at the age of 84, his 61st start and 58th finish there.
