In its 29th year as principal sponsor of the Boston Marathon, John Hancock Financial today announced the elite field for the 118th running of the Boston Marathon on April 21. A complete field list follows.

Reigning champions Lelisa Desisa and Rita Jeptoo will return to defend their titles, but will be challenged by the fastest field ever assembled for the world’s most historic marathon.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced that registration for the 2014 B.A.A. Distance Medley will begin on Wednesday, January 22 at 10:00 a.m. ET and will continue until Wednesday, January 29 at 5:00 p.m. ET. During this exclusive registration window, runners interested in entering all three events of the B.A.A. Distance Medley may register for the series. Registration will be held online at www.baa.org and will be limited to 3,000 entrants. Each of the three races will have its own field size limit.

John Hancock Financial today announced the Elite USA Team for the 118th running of the Boston Marathon on April 21, 2014. The exceptional U.S. team, recruited to compete with a deep international field, includes Desiree Davila Linden, Shalane Flanagan, Amy Hastings, Serena Burla, Adriana Nelson, Dathan Ritzenhein, Meb Keflezighi, Brett Gotcher, Jason Hartmann, Nick Arciniaga and Jeffrey Eggleston.

John Hancock Financial today announced the return of 2013 Boston Marathon champions Rita Jeptoo of Kenya and Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia for the 118th running of the race on April 21.

With a world-class field contending for the men’s champion’s title this past April, the early miles of the race were typically strategic over the historic Hopkinton to Boston course. In the closing miles, three runners broke away from the pack to vie for the olive wreath.

The Boston Athletic Association, organizer of the Boston Marathon®, has issued a limited number of invitational entries for the 2014 Boston Marathon for those who were deeply impacted by the events of April 15, 2013.  The B.A.A. thanks all who submitted a request to participate in the 2014 Boston Marathon.

Notifications have been sent both to those who have been accepted and to those who were not accepted.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced that the B.A.A. 5K will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2014, two days prior to the 2014 Boston Marathon®. The start and finish will be relocated from Copley Square Park to Boston Common. Registration will be held online at www.baa.org beginning on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. ET and will be limited to 10,000 entrants. The cost to register is $50 USD and participants must be 10 years of age or older to register.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.), organizer of the Boston Marathon®, will issue a limited number of invitational entries for the 2014 Boston Marathon for those who were most impacted by the events of April 15, 2013.

Those who have a special connection to the events of April 15 and who would like to be considered for an invitational entry, may submit a request to the B.A.A. Submissions will be collected entirely online at www.baa.org and must be typed in 250 words or less. The B.A.A. will not accept photos, videos, or other non-written material. Requests will be reviewed by a selection committee appointed by the B.A.A. and decisions will be made in the sole discretion of the B.A.A.

Universal Sports Network, the year-round destination for Olympic and endurance sports programming, will provide LIVE television and online coverage of the 118th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 21, 2014 from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM ET. LIVE race day coverage from Copley Square will also include pre- and post-race shows at 8:30 AM ET and 12:30 PM ET respectively, and a wrap-up show at 4 PM ET.

2013 Boston Marathon® champion Lelisa Desisa (ETH) and Kim Smith (NZL) won the 13th B.A.A. Half Marathon, presented by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund, under sunny skies in Boston’s Franklin Park. Desisa and Smith both broke the event record on this rolling course through Boston’s picturesque Emerald Necklace park system, running 1:00:34 and 1:09:14, respectively. Stephen Sambu (KEN), who placed third today, and Smith won the 2013 B.A.A. Distance Medley and earned $100,000 each.

13th B.A.A. HALF MARATHON: The 13th B.A.A. Half Marathon, presented by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund, highlights the beauty of Boston's Emerald Necklace park system while furthering the B.A.A.'s mission of promoting health and fitness. The race will start and finish at White Stadium in Boston’s Franklin Park on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. ET and will include more than 7,500 participants.

1935 John A. Kelley

Born in West Medford, Massachusetts as one of ten children, Kelley ran track and cross-country at Arlington High School in Massachusetts. He did not finish his first Boston Marathon in 1928, but eventually competed in a record 61 Boston Marathons. A legend of the marathon, Kelley won the 1935 and 1945 runnings of the Boston Marathon. He finished in second place at Boston a record seven times. Between 1934 to 1950, he finished in the top five 15 times at Boston, consistently running in the 2:30s. He ran his last full marathon at Boston in 1992 at the age of 84, his 61st start and 58th finish there.
