By Any running enthusiast knows that Boston is all about tradition, and the tradition of excellence in the B.A.A.'s middle distance events - held on Marathon Saturday - is now as firmly entrenched as any of those in Monday's Marathon. Olympic silver medalist Dejen Gebremeskel added his name to the list of illustrious winners of the event, winning the B.A.A. Invitational Mile title in a swift 4:04.1. Also earning wins today were Michael McDonald in the Boys’ Scholastic Mile and Lucas Aramburu in the Boys’ Middle School 1K.

Molly Huddle defended her B.A.A. 5K title on Saturday morning in grand fashion, breaking the tape and the American record in 14:50, slashing four seconds off the mark set by Deena Kastor in 2002.

The 119th Boston Marathon® on Monday, April 20, 2015, and surrounding Marathon-related events including the John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo and the B.A.A. 5K, will bring an estimated $181.9 million (USD) in spending impact to the Greater Boston region, according to Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau (GBCVB) President and CEO, Patrick Moscaritolo. Held annually on Patriots’ Day, the Boston Marathon is the world’s oldest consecutively run marathon and ranks as one of the world’s most prestigious road racing events. The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) has managed and organized the Boston Marathon since the event’s inception in 1897.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced an elite field of world class competitors for the 2015 B.A.A. Invitational Mile, to be held on Saturday, April 18, two days prior to the 2015 Boston Marathon®. Three-time B.A.A. Invitational Mile champion and 2012 Olympian Morgan Uceny (USA) will look to win her fourth title, while European Championships medalist Chris O’Hare (GBR) headlines the men’s field. The B.A.A. Invitational Mile will also include Middle School 1,000 meter races and Scholastic Mile races featuring youths from the eight cities and towns of the Boston Marathon course.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced an elite field of Olympians and returning champions for the 2015 B.A.A. 5K, to be held on Saturday, April 18, two days prior to the 2015 Boston Marathon®. Defending women’s champion Molly Huddle will return to the streets of Boston, while two-time winner Ben True comes back seeking to be the first athlete to earn three B.A.A. 5K titles.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) announced today that Dick Hoyt of Team Hoyt will be the Grand Marshal of the 2015 Boston Marathon® on Monday, April 20. Two of the Boston Marathon’s most recognizable figures, Dick and son Rick Hoyt completed their 32nd and final Boston Marathon together in 2014. Dick announced afterwards that he would retire from the Boston Marathon.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) announced today that defending push rim wheelchair division champions Ernst van Dyk (RSA) and Tatyana McFadden (USA) will compete in the 2015 Boston Marathon® on Monday, April 20. Van Dyk and McFadden will look to add another olive wreath to their decorated Boston Marathon collection, leading a field that includes past Boston Marathon champions, world champions, Paralympic medalists, and world record holders. For the 30th consecutive year, principal sponsor John Hancock Financial Services will provide the prize purse for the race. The men’s and women’s champions will each earn $20,000 (USD) in prize money. New for 2015, the total prize purse for the push rim wheelchair division has increased by $24,500 to $84,500, distributed equally among men and women.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) announced today that several champions of the Boston Marathon® will return to participate in events surrounding the 119th Boston Marathon, to be held on Monday, April 20, 2015. Champions Lisa Rainsberger (USA, 1985), Gelindo Bordin (ITA, 1990), Joan Samuelson (USA, 1979 and 1983), and Amby Burfoot (USA, 1968) will join 30,000 entrants in this year’s running of the world’s oldest annual marathon.

1920 - Ashland Start

The Boston Marathon began in Ashland, Massachusetts from 1897 through 1923 then moved to Hopkinton for the 1924 race. The course was lengthened to 26 miles, 385 yards to conform to the Olympic standard, and the starting line was moved west from Ashland to Hopkinton. Since then, the race has started in Hopkinton every year.
