In its 32nd year as principal sponsor of the Boston Marathon, John Hancock Financial today announced the elite field for the 121st Boston Marathon on April 17. A complete field list follows.

John Hancock Financial today announced the U.S. Elite Team for the Boston Marathon on April 17, 2017. The exceptional team, recruited to compete with a deep international field, includes the men’s 2014 champion Meb Keflezighi, four-time Olympian Shalane Flanagan, two-time Olympic medalist Galen Rupp, and two-time Olympian Desiree Linden. Olympians Jared Ward and Abdi Abdirahman are also in the field, as are Lindsay Flanagan, Clara Santucci (née Grandt), Shadrack Biwott, Esther Atkins, and Sean Quigley. Additionally, track standout Jordan Hasay will make her marathon debut at Boston. Collectively, the 12-member John Hancock Elite U.S. Team has competed and won medals in Olympic, World and Pan American Championships, and all bring strong credentials to compete for the win at the 121st running of the Boston Marathon.

The Boston Athletic Association has announced upcoming registration dates for the 2017 B.A.A. 5K and 2017 B.A.A. Distance Medley, both of which will open in January.

John Hancock Financial, the principal sponsor of the Boston Marathon since 1986, today announced the return of 2016 Boston Marathon champions Atsede Baysa and Lemi Berhanu Hayle of Ethiopia to defend their titles at the 121st running of the race on April 17, 2017.

12 DEC 2016

Buzunesh Deba of Ethiopia has been named the winner of the 2014 Boston Marathon, following the disqualification of Rita Jeptoo from the event. Deba finished in a time of 2:19:59. As a result, she becomes the course record holder. Her performance bested that of Margaret Okayo, who ran 2:20:43 in 2002.

The Boston Athletic Association announced today that the 2016 performance of Shalane Flanagan at the B.A.A. 10K, presented by Brigham and Women’s Hospital is officially a new course record and a new American record. The performance was recently ratified at the USA Track & Field Annual Meeting, after the course distance was verified and a review of the race was complete. Flanagan’s performance on June 26 beat her previous US record of 31:03 which she set in September of 2015. It bettered the previous course record by 12 seconds.

After spending five and a half weeks training at high altitude in Mammoth Lakes, California, the B.A.A. High Performance Team is back in Boston and ready for the upcoming racing season. Guided by B.A.A. High Performance Coach Terrence Mahon, seven of the nine members of the B.A.A. High Performance team spent time in California.

The Boston Athletic Association has received the Court of Arbitration for Sport decision in the arbitration procedure between the IAAF, Athletics Kenya, and Rita Jeptoo.

With memories of last year's Boston Mayor's Cup Cross Country Meet fresh in their minds, both Liv Westphal and Jim Spisak were motivated to finish atop the podium at today's meet in historic Franklin Park. After placing second a year ago, the pair used experience to their advantage and surged to the top of the podium thanks to strong moves in the middle miles. Hosted by the the B.A.A. and USATF New England, the Mayor's Cup Cross Country meet brought together runners of all ages on a clear but extremely windy day.

On a picture-perfect day for cross country, seventeen schools and more than 300 youth student-athletes from the City of Boston competed at today's 20th annual Boston Middle School Cross Country Championships, hosted by the Boston Athletic Association with adidas at Franklin Park. The Championships are held with the support of the Boston Public Schools and the Boston Parks & Recreation Department.
