John Hancock Financial and the Boston Athletic Association today announced that the 2013 Boston Marathon champion, Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia, will gift his championship medal to the City of Boston, on behalf of all Boston Marathon runners, to honor the victims and families affected by the tragic events of April 15, 2013.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced that 2013 Boston Marathon® men's champion Lelisa Desisa, of Ethiopia, will compete in the 2013 B.A.A. 10K on Sunday, June 23. Desisa will compete among Olympic and World Championship finalists, national record holders, and the defending champions of the B.A.A. Distance Medley. The B.A.A. 10K is the second race of the 2013 B.A.A. Distance Medley, a three-race series which awards $100,000 USD to the male and female with the fastest cumulative time from the three races. In addition, the B.A.A. 10K offers a combined prize purse of nearly $30,000 USD.

The B.A.A., organizer of the Boston Marathon, is issuing an invitation to participate in the 2014 Boston Marathon to official entrants in the 2013 Boston Marathon who were unable to cross the Boylston Street finish line. More than 5000 official starters were affected on Monday, April 15 at the 117th Boston Marathon when the race was stopped at 2:50 p.m. ET.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced that registration for the B.A.A. 10K has closed after its 6,500 entrant field size limit was reached. The B.A.A. 10K will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2013, and will be the second race of the B.A.A. Distance Medley. Registration opened on May 8 at 10:00 a.m. ET and closed approximately 13 hours later at 11:15 p.m. ET.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.), organizer of the Boston Marathon® since its inception in 1897, today announced a $250,000 donation to The One Fund Boston, Inc., which was organized to benefit those most affected by the tragic events that occurred in Boston on April 15, 2013.

You could say that the men’s race at the 117th Boston Marathon evolved to be a curious enterprise; but, that’s probably the case with most marathons. Even so, there’s no denying that there were strange goings on out on the route from Hopkinton to Boston.

In 2006, Rita Jeptoo won the Boston Marathon by 10 seconds. At the time, it was the closest margin of victory in the history of the race. Between 2008 and 2012, the women’s races were decided by a total—a total—of 10 seconds. Jeptoo was not a factor in any of them.

Both competing for the first time in the Boston Marathon this year, Hiroyuki Yamamoto (JPN) and Tatyana McFadden (USA) won the men’s and women’s wheelchair divisions. The Boston rookies employed very different but equally successful tactics in their commanding wins over large and talented fields that included numerous past Boston Marathon champions and Paralympic Games medalists.

Boston Marathon weekend 2013 kicked off on Sunday morning (April 14th) with the B.A.A. 5K, the first race in the 2013 B.A.A. Distance Medley, a three-race series comprising the 5K, the B.A.A. 10K and the B.A.A. Half Marathon. The Distance Medley was inaugurated last year, with Kim Smith (NZL) and Allan Kiprono (KEN) taking the overall titles in races that were never anything other than intense. There could hardly have been a better way to kick off the 2013 series than with the Marathon Weekend’s 5K, boasting a field of competitors worthy of a major championship final.
