John Hancock Financial announced the Elite USA Team for the 119th running of the Boston Marathon on April 20, 2015. The exceptional team, recruited to compete with a deep international field, includes the men’s defending champion Meb Keflezighi, as well as Shalane Flanagan, Desiree Davila Linden, Amy Hastings, Dathan Ritzenhein, Nick Arciniaga, Jeffrey Eggleston, and Fernando Cabada. Each member has competed in Olympic or World Championships and brings strong credentials to compete in the 119th running of the Boston Marathon.

The media credential application process for the 119th Boston Marathon is scheduled to open on Monday, February 9 at 10:00 a.m. ET.

Seventeen schools from the City of Boston competed at today's Boston Middle School Cross Country Championships, hosted by the Boston Athletic Association with adidas at Franklin Park, and in conjunction with Boston Public Schools, Boston Centers for Youth & Families, and the Boston Parks & Recreation Department . Under clear skies and with conditions ideal for racing, Boys Championship and Girls Championship races covering 1200 meters were held, as well as a co-ed relay.

Exciting races played out at the 24th Mayor's Cup, presented by the B.A.A. and adidas, at Franklin Park on Sunday, with athletes competing in races at the youth, open, and masters levels. The Boston Athletic Association claimed Men's and Women's Championship team titles, while also taking home top honors in the Franklin Park 5-K.

On Monday, the Boston Athletic Association shined at the USATF National Women's Club Team 10K Championships in Boston, taking home the national title. Racing together for a majority of the race, the B.A.A.'s Katie Matthews, Jen Rhines, and Juliet Bottorff all finished in the top 13.

On a picture perfect day for racing, Ethiopians Mamitu Daska and Lelisa Desisa were crowned champions at the 14th B.A.A. Half Marathon, presented by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. Daska established a new event record of 1:08:20, while Desisa earned his second consecutive B.A.A. Half Marathon victory in 1:01:38, covering the rolling, spectacular course through Boston’s Emerald Necklace park system in style.

Abbott and the World Marathon Majors announced a new partnership with Abbott becoming the race series' first-ever title sponsor. The series – comprising six of the largest and most renowned marathons in the world: Tokyo, Boston, Virgin Money London, BMW BERLIN, Bank of America Chicago and TCS New York City Marathon – will be renamed the Abbott World Marathon Majors starting in 2015.

1966 - Bobbi Gibb

Although not an official entrant, Roberta “Bobbi” Gibb became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon. Joining the starting field shortly after the gun had been fired, Gibb finished the race in 3:21:40 to place 126th overall. Gibb again claimed the “unofficial” title in 1967 and 1968.
