BOSTON - Registration for the 2016 Boston Marathon will re-open on Monday morning (September 21) for all qualifiers who have met the standard by any amount of time. This next phase of registration will occur from Monday at 10:00 a.m. ET through Wednesday, September 23 at 5:00 p.m. ET.

"Thus far, we have seen an increase in the number of applications for 2016 during Week One, which is a tribute to everyone involved in the aftermath of 2013 and the 2014 and 2015 Boston Marathons," said Tom Grilk, B.A.A. Executive Director.  "With an increase of approximately 15% across the three phases of registration recently completed, we thank everyone who submitted an application for entry during Week One.  We are prepared to see increased interest year over year for Week Two, as well, and similar to the past two years it is likely that we will have more interest than we can accommodate."

Entry for this next week is also not first-come, first-served, but rather entry continues to be based upon the number of available spots remaining combined with the total number of submissions received and their qualifying performances. The fastest from among all of these performances submitted will be accepted on a space available basis.

Based on the progress of registration to date, approximately 5,000 qualifiers will be accepted from those who submit their application during this week.

With respect for all qualifiers who are interested in submitting an application for entry, the B.A.A. will not predict the total number of application submissions which it expects to receive.

For the 2015 race, the B.A.A. accepted those who were one minute, two seconds faster than the standard last year. More than 24,000 qualifiers will comprise the field of 30,000 in 2016, which is similar to this past year.

Even as the B.A.A. prepares to re-open registration on Monday, its staff is verifying thousands of performances submitted from last week. Therefore, a note to athletes applying for entry into the 2016 Boston Marathon: the time it takes for entries to be verified and confirmed is different for each individual athlete. The B.A.A. is managing thousands of entry applications at the moment, and strives for timeliness with accuracy in the verification of qualifying times and entry.

Those who submitted an application during Week One have a position in the race secured provided their application is valid, even if they have not yet received confirmation of acceptance from the B.A.A.  A submission identification number holds the place until a performance is verified.

Those who submit an application during Week Two can expect to receive notification by September 30. The B.A.A. will make available statistics from the registration process for the 2016 Boston Marathon, including the total number of applications received and the cut-off time, if applicable, at the conclusion of the registration process when notifications are issued (Sept. 30).

The 120th Boston Marathon will be held on Monday, April 18, 2016. The race will mark the 31st consecutive year the event has John Hancock Financial as its principal sponsor.
