Shalane Flanagan’s American Record Time of 30:52 Officially Ratified by USATF

BOSTON – The Boston Athletic Association announced today that the 2016 performance of Shalane Flanagan at the B.A.A. 10K, presented by Brigham and Women’s Hospital is officially a new course record and a new American record. The performance was recently ratified at the USA Track & Field Annual Meeting, after the course distance was verified and a review of the race was complete. Flanagan’s performance on June 26 beat her previous US record of 31:03 which she set in September of 2015. It bettered the previous course record by 12 seconds.

For Flanagan, the B.A.A. 10K served as a tune up for the 2016 Olympic Marathon where she finished as the top American in sixth place. “This will go down as one of my favorite races of my career,” Flanagan said of the B.A.A. 10K. “I love running in my hometown.”

While it was Flanagan’s first appearance at the B.A.A. 10K, she is no stranger to running fast in Boston. She’s a three time finisher of the Boston Marathon, placing fourth in 2013 (2:27:08), sixth in 2014 (2:22:02), and ninth in 2015 (2:27:47). Flanagan’s 2:22:02 time from 2014 ranks as the fastest Boston Marathon ever by an American woman. The Marblehead, Massachusetts native is a four-time Olympian and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist on the track.

The B.A.A. 10K is run on a flat course that winds through Boston’s Back Bay. It has produced fast results since its inception in 2011, and annually features a deep field of World Championship and Olympic medalists. The race was recently featured by Outside Magazine as being one of the Nation’s fastest. Here’s a list of the winning times over the years:
