BWH Becomes Presenting Sponsor of the B.A.A. 10K

BOSTON – The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announces Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) will serve as the first presenting sponsor and exclusive fundraising partner of the B.A.A. 10K. The 2016 B.A.A. 10K, presented by BWH, will be held on Sunday, June 26, starting and finishing on Charles Street adjacent to Boston Common.

“We are proud to partner with Brigham and Women’s Hospital on the B.A.A. 10K, one of our signature events,” says Tom Grilk, Executive Director of the B.A.A. “The Brigham is an international healthcare leader known for world-class care and groundbreaking research that helps millions of patients here in Boston and around the globe. We are honored to be aligned with such an esteemed and respected institution.”

Debbi Murphy, a veteran member of the BWH Life.Giving.Breakthroughs. Boston Marathon team, explains why she plans to run the B.A.A. 10K for BWH this June. “The Brigham helped me get through surgery, through my Boston Marathon run, and then through yet a second surgery. Through it all, I knew I was in the best hands, receiving care from providers who not only have a passion for what they do, but are themselves supported by their patients and community. The B.A.A. 10K is a way for grateful patients like me to give back.”

The inaugural, multi-year partnership between the B.A.A. and BWH will underscore both organizations’ commitment to fostering healthy lifestyles, especially through the sport of running. Now in its sixth year, the B.A.A. 10K, presented by Brigham and Women’s Hospital, serves to kick off the summer road racing season with an opportunity for participants to experience the thrill of running through the streets of downtown Boston while supporting a world-class hospital.

Audrey Epstein Reny, co-founder of the Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Fund at BWH and a multi-year runner with the Stepping Strong marathon and B.A.A. 5K team, is looking forward to this new opportunity to run the B.A.A. 10K with BWH. “I am forever grateful to the Brigham for saving my daughter Gillian’s life and limbs after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. Running the B.A.A. 10K to support the Stepping Strong Fund is one of many ways we can meet our mission of raising funds for trauma research and care while building on the community spirit of Boston Strong.”

As the exclusive fundraising partner for the B.A.A. 10K, BWH will establish a pledge fundraising team of ambassadors who will run to raise funds in support of life-giving breakthroughs across all disciplines, disease areas, and departments at BWH. Participants can form teams or run as individuals- with fundraising dollars benefiting the fund of the runner’s choosing.

“The B.A.A. has been a great partner to the Brigham, helping us grow and expand our Boston Marathon program and team. We’re delighted to partner with them once again on yet another iconic race that will provide novel fundraising opportunities for BWH while underscoring our commitment to fostering healthy lifestyles in our community,” says Betsy Nabel, MD, president of BWH.

Pre-registration for BWH runners opens March 22 at BWHevents.org/BAA10K. Registration for the B.A.A. 10K, presented by Brigham and Women’s Hospital, will then open on Wednesday, April 6, at 10:00 a.m. ET. The field size for this year’s B.A.A. 10K will be 10,000 participants. For more information on the B.A.A. 10K, including details on the registration process, visit www.baa.org.

The B.A.A. 10K is the second event of the B.A.A. Distance Medley, a three-race series which also includes April’s B.A.A. 5K and October’s B.A.A. Half Marathon, presented by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. Routinely one of the fastest 10K’s in America, the B.A.A. 10K is a scenic tour through Boston’s Back Bay, passing notable neighborhoods and attractions including the campus of Boston University and Kenmore Square. The race begins on Charles Street, winds down picturesque Commonwealth Avenue and Bay State Road as far west as Babcock Street near Boston University. The course then heads back on Commonwealth Avenue, around the Public Garden, and finishes on Charles Street next to Boston Common.
