Ashe Leads B.A.A. to title in Amherst

The wintery weekend weather may have delayed the start of the first USATF-NE Grand Prix race of the year but it did not hinder Eric Ashe’s pursuit of repeating his 2014 performance at the Five College Realtors 10 Miler in Amherst. In a pre-race talk, Eric discussed the apparent slippery condition in the final 100 meters to the finish line commenting, “I hope it doesn’t come down to a kick because it could end badly”. It did come down to a sprint finish but it didn’t end badly at all for Eric. Eric repeated his 2014 performance by holding off Ruben Sanca of Whirlaway Racing Team by less than a half second finishing in 50:34.4 to Ruben’s 50:34.8.  Last year, Eric and Ruben were also in a tight battle finished 1-2 with Eric winning by a slightly wider margin in 50:43 with Ruben in 50:50.

Eric led the B.A.A. men to the team championship over Whirlaway. In 2014, the men bested Western Mass Distance Project for the men’s Open team title. Chris Magill pulled double duty scoring for both the men’s Open and men’s Masters team by placing 11th overall and winning the men’s Masters title in 54:10. Chris was just behind B.A.A. teammate Brad Mish finishing 10th in 53:58 and ahead of Jason Reilly (30th, 56:47) and Christopher Lawrence ( 42nd, 57:43). Christopher also scored for both the men’s Open team and led the men’s Senior team to a 3rd place finish while winning the 50-59 age category. The B.A.A. men’s Masters team placed 2nd overall by just seven seconds in a close battle with Central Mass Striders.

Although the B.A.A. women did not have a scoring team at the 10 mile race, Katie Misuraca placed in the top ten in the women’s race finishing in 9th overall in 1:01:31. Katie commented that she was still shaking off the rust coming off her fall marathon victory at the Bay State Marathon and she’s looking ahead to a spring marathon.

Congrats to all of the B.A.A. runners who braved the cold and snowy roads this weekend to race the Five College Realtors 10 Miler. Next on the USATF-NE Grand Prix is the New Bedford Half Marathon on Sunday, March 15th.
