Dionne wins the 38th New Bedford Half Marathon

B.A.A. Men’s Team Win both Open and Masters Divisions

On a day that Boston broke the record for the most snowfall in a season, it seemed fitting to have a cold and windy day for the New England Half Marathon Championships. For the second time in three years, Hilary Dionne won the the New Bedford Half Marathon with a new personal best time of 1:14:01. Hilary led the B.A.A. women to the team championship win with three B.A.A. runners scoring in the women’s top ten. Katie Misuraca finished 6th overall with a time of 1:19:02 and, in her debut race as a B.A.A. running club member, Kaela O’Neil placed 9th in 1:20:36. Mimi Fallon won the women’s Masters Division in 1:24:39 finishing 24th overall in the women’s field and led the B.A.A. women’s Masters to a fourth place team finish.

In the men’s race, it was a B.A.A. team effort to win the Open and Masters Divisions with a couple of top B.A.A. Masters scoring for both categories.  Alex Taylor led the B.A.A. men with an 11th place finish in 1:09:07 followed by Nils Schallner in 13th place with a time of 1:09:47. Chris Magill won the Men’s Masters with an impressive time of 1:10:44 and was the third B.A.A. runner to score the men’s Open team while leading the men’s Masters to a team victory. Chris is leading the USATF-NE Grand Prix Series in the Masters category with a win at the New England 10 Mile Championship in February. Mike Galoob, returned to racing after a few months off and used the New Bedford Half to shake off the winter rust. Mike had a solid performance as the 4th team scorer and runner-up to Chris in the Masters category with a time of 1:11:32. Training partners Jonathan Baker and Ian Nurse ran stride for stride and finished with an identical time of 1:12:48 as the 5th and 6th team scorers for the B.A.A.

After losing the New England 10 Mile team championship last month by just seven seconds to the Central Mass Striders, the men’s B.A.A. Masters team arrived in New Bedford with a full squad and ready to avenge the loss. Led by Chris Magill and Mike Galoob, the men’s Masters won by a margin of almost fifteen minutes over second place Whirlaway Racing Team. Harry Stants was the third team scorer in 1:13:25 and Keven O’Neil trailed in 1:13:49. Chris Lawrence, second in the Senior division, was the fifth scorer for the Masters team in 1:15:02. After two events, the B.A.A. Masters are leading the USATF-NE Grand Prix Team Series.

On a cold and windy day that proved to be more challenging than expected, the B.A.A. showed their resilience and performed with forty-nine club runners finishing the race, many in their final weeks of training for the 119th Boston Marathon in April. Congrats to Hilary for her outstanding performance and to all of the B.A.A. running club team that raced in the New Bedford Half Marathon.
