Ruben Sanca Crowned New England Half Marathon Champion at New Bedford
In an impressive run, Ruben Sanca led from start to finish to win his first New Bedford Half Marathon on Sunday, March 20, 2011 in New Bedford, MA. In the process, he also claimed his first USATF Half Marathon Championship and led the Men’s Open Team to their seventh consecutive USATF New England Half Marathon team title. The women, led by Diana Bowser’s runner-up finish, also successfully defended their title, claiming their sixth consecutive USATF New England Half Marathon Championship.

After a long, hard winter of training, B.A.A. Running Club members were rewarded with some good weather and some strong performances. It was all yellow as the B.A.A. men crossed the line, taking eight of the top ten spots and 11 of the top 15. Following Sanca in 3rd through 6th place were Nathan Krah, Dan Smith, Patrick Moulton, and Justin Fyffe. The five combined for an overall time of 5:36:59 – a full 15 minutes ahead of second place.

In the women’s competition, The B.A.A. finished first, second and fifth in the team scoring to clinch the title. Bowser teamed with Kasie Enman and Kathryn Hatch to outdistance second place by almost 19 minutes. Lisa Kaplan ran a 3 minute PR to capture the Master’s Title and the USATF New England Grand Prix Mater's title .

The New Bedford Half Marathon is the first race in the 2011 USATF New England Grand Prix Championship. With both titles firmly in hand, the B.A.A. is off to a strong start. The next USATF New England Grand Prix race will be the James Joyce Ramble 10k in Dedham, MA on Sunday, May 1st.

1996 - Centennial Boston Marathon

The historic centennial Boston Marathon in 1996 was monumental for many reasons. It was the not only the first time that the ChampionChip timing and scoring device was used in a major US Marathon, but it was the largest running event ever held at the time.

The starting field of 38,708 stood for more than seven years as the largest in the history of the sport. Included among the finishers were 16 Boston champions.
