Triple Crowns: B.A.A. Men's & Women's Open Teams and Men's Masters Team Win Titles at Boston
Good things come in threes and that was evident at the 116th running of the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 16, 2012. The Boston Athletic Association captured three team titles winning the Men's Open, Women's Open, and Men's Master's competition. This marks the first time that all three teams have earned top honors in the same year.

While the end result was the thrill of victory, getting to that podium was no easy task. On a day that saw temperatures rise steadily into the high 80s, the trek from Hopkinton to Boston was even more of a physical and mental challenge than usual. If the 2011 Boston Marathon gets an asterisk for the cool conditions and strong tailwind, the 2012 versions deserves one as well - for just the opposite. Bright sun, temperatures in the 80s, and slight humidity added an additional challenge to the 26.2 mile race. The runners did have a tailwind, ironically on one of the only days that a head wind would have been beneficial.

In spite of the adverse conditions, a number of individuals had superlative performances. In the women's race, Hilary Dionne was the second American woman to cross the line. Dionne participated in the Elite Women's Start, taking off from Hopkinton along with the other top female competitors. Dionne got out a little faster than planned, but eventually settled into a steady pace, finishing in 15th place with her 2:51:56. Just behind Dionne was Lindsay Willard in 17th place. Willard's performance is noteworthy not only for her top twenty finish, but also because she managed to post a new personal best time of 2:55:53 in the heat. Elle Pishny who also scored on the winning women's team last year, was the third B.A.A. woman across the line, securing the team title. The 2012 win marks the fourth consecutive and tenth team title overall for the B.A.A. women.

The men had their work cut out for them with some strong teams entered in the competition, but at the end of the day, the team trophy remained with the hosts as the men successfully defended their 2011 title. Nick Wheeler ran 2:33:30 to place 35th overall. Colman Hatton, and Jonathan Baker were a solid 2-3, placing 61st and 67th overall. Their combined time of 7:48:48 was almost seven minutes faster than the runner-up team and earned them their seventh team title.

The Men's Masters' Team won their first-ever team title in the closest competition of the day. They have four previous runner-up finished to their credit, but this was their year to take over the top spot. Strong performances by Peter Hammer, Wayne Levy, and Christopher Lawrence resulted in a 52-second margin of victory. Hammer led the charge with his 2:45:46. He also picked-up some hardware as the runner-up in the 45-49 age group.

In all, some 90 members of the Boston Athletic Association completed the marathon, with many among the top finishers in the 21,000+ field as a result of their hard work in preparing for the race and a smart race-day strategy.

1996 - Centennial Boston Marathon

The starting field of 38,708 for the centennial race stood for more than seven years as the largest in the history of the sport. Included among the finishers were 16 Boston champions. The historic 100th Boston Marathon was monumental for another reason. It was the first time that a chip timing and scoring device was used in a major US Marathon.
