Hilary Dionne, B.A.A. Teams Win Gold at New Bedford
The luck of the Irish shone down on the B.A.A. this St. Patrick’s Day weekend as three teams and an individual all went home with a pot of gold medals. Under clear blue skies with temperatures in the high 50s, conditions were perfect at the New Bedford Half Marathon on Sunday, March 18, 2012 in New Bedford, MA and organized by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.. Running in her second USATF New England Grand Prix Race in five months, Hilary Dionne ran away from the field to capture her second New England title. The 2011 Cape Cod Marathon Champion, Dionne ran patiently, breaking away over the latter miles to capture the New England Half Marathon Championship. A former Dartmouth College harrier, New Bedford was Dionne’s first race representing the B.A.A. In addition to her individual title, she led the women to their seventh USATF New England Grand Prix Half Marathon Championship. Also scoring for the B.A.A. were Lindsay Willard, who was third female overall, and Rachel Asher. The three women combined for a total time of 4:02:31, some ten minutes ahead of the runner-up team.

The men had double the luck, with both the men’s open and master’s team taking first place. The open men were led by a charge of six B.A.A. runners displaying the blue and gold. Colman Hatton was the first B.A.A. runner to cross the line in sixth place. Close behind were Patrick Moulton in seventh, Jared Markowitz eighth, Brad Mish in ninth, and Justin Fyffe in tenth place. Just 2:15 separated the five scoring runners. The win gave the men their eighth consecutive USATF New England Half Marathon Championship title.

The Men’s Master’s Team was led by New England Master’s Cross Country Champion Pete Hammer. Hammer was second master, just ahead of Keven O’Neil who placed third among the Master’s. Wayne Levy, Rey Flores and Jon Schoenberg rounded out the team scoring. The 2012 title marked the first USATF New England Half Marathon Championship at New Bedford for the Master’s Men.

The B.A.A. Men’s & Women’s Open teams now stand at 2-0 in the 2012 USATF New England Grand Prix Series. There will be a slight hiatus before the series resumes on May 21st with the Bedford (NH) Rotary 12k.
