39th Marathon Sports 5 Miler proves to be a competitive field for B.A.A. club runners

David Bedoya and Laura Brustolon led the way for the B.A.A. running club at the Thursday evening classic Marathon Sports 5 Mile Road Race. The race, which advertises a mix of road, trails, and track surfaces, provided near ideal summer racing weather on a summer evening that has had some hot race nights. David Bedoya was the top performer for the B.A.A. men with a 6th place overall finish in 26:14 (1st 30-39). New B.A.A. club member, Deniz Karakoyunlu, placed 2nd to David in the 30-39 age group with a personal best time of 28:15 and 23rd overall. Michael Vitelli led a trio of B.A.A. Seniors finishing 49th overall in 29:37 followed by Bernie O’Reilly (2nd 50-59) in 30:51 and Craig MacFarlane (3rd 50-59) in 31:01. Laura Brustolon placed second overall for the women’s race with a time of 30:21 and second in the 20-29 age category.

B.A.A. Moment 2

1935 John A. Kelley

Born in West Medford, Massachusetts as one of ten children, Kelley ran track and cross-country at Arlington High School in Massachusetts. He did not finish his first Boston Marathon in 1928, but eventually competed in a record 61 Boston Marathons. A legend of the marathon, Kelley won the 1935 and 1945 runnings of the Boston Marathon. He finished in second place at Boston a record seven times. Between 1934 to 1950, he finished in the top five 15 times at Boston, consistently running in the 2:30s. He ran his last full marathon at Boston in 1992 at the age of 84, his 61st start and 58th finish there.
