B.A.A.’s Caroline Bjune wins 10K title at USATF Masters Outdoor Championships

Caroline Bjune received a USATF First Timer Grant to compete in the Masters Outdoor National Track & Field Championships. The meet took place at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina on July 17th – 20th. The first event of the meet was the women’s 10,000 meter race with Caroline leading the way to victory in 40:17 and over a minute ahead of the next competitor. Caroline returned to the track the following day to compete in the 5000 meter race where she placed 7th overall in the 40-44 age category with a time of 19:33. Congrats to Caroline on her first national championship win as a master.

1972 - Women Official Entrants in Marathon

Although Bobbi Gibb was the first woman to complete the Boston Marathon in 1966, it was not until the 1972 Boston Marathon that women could become official entrants due to a change in AAU rules. Pictured (left to right) above are seven of the eight women who participanted in the first official women's field of the Boston Marathon - Nina Kusciak, Katherine Switzer, Elaine Pederson, Ginny Collins, Pat Barrett, Frances Morrison, Sara Mae Berman (not pictured - Valerie Rogosheske).
