Mish 5th at USATF New England 5k Championship; Rhines Takes 8th at Carlsbad 5000
The 5k was the popular racing distance for the Boston Athletic Association this past weekend as club members took a break from longer races and marathon training to drop down to the shorter event. In the continuation of the 2014 USATF New England Grand Prix Series, the B.A.A. had teams competing in the An Ras Mor 5k in Somerville, MA on Sunday, March 30, 2014. Brad Mish placed 5th overall to pace the team. The master's were well-represented, finishing 2nd through 6th for the B.A.A. Their combined time resulted in a third-place finish. So far in the 2014 series, the masters' team has yet to finish off the podium.

Also coming down in distance on Sunday, but in a different time zone was Jen Rhines who placed 8th overall in the Carlsbad 5000 in Carlsbad, CA. Rhines, who helped the B.A.A. Women's Open Team to a silver medal at the USATF National 15k Championship two weeks ago, ran a solid 16:03 finishing 4 seconds ahead of 2014 USATF Indoor 3000m Champion Gabe Grunewald.

Not running, but also making headlines at the Carlsbad 5000 was the B.A.A's Communications Manager, Marc Davis. Davis' American 5k road record, set in 1996, was broken at Carlsbad by Bernard Legat who ran 13:19 to Davis' 13:24.

The job of covering the 5k distance on the oval was given to Tim Ritchie who competed at the Raleigh Relays on Friday, March 28th in Raleigh, NC. Ritchie placed 5th overall in 13:54.47.

With just under three weeks to go until the 118th Boston Marathon, some 105 members of the B.A.A. Running Club are preparing for the 26.2 mile journey from Hopkinton to Boston. Other upcoming races for the club include the USATF Master's 10k Championship, hosted by the James Joyce Ramble on April 27th in Dedham, MA. and the next race in the USATF New England Grand Prix series, the Ribfest 5 Mile on June 15th in Merrimack, N.H. In addition, several club members will be kicking-off their track seasons, looking to qualify for the 2014 USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Sacramento, CA, June 26-29th.
