UPCOMING RACES

Here are some upcoming team races, get in touch by the listed entry deadline in order to be entered. To do so, send an email to pieroni@baa.org

  • Ribfest 5M,  Merrimack, NH, June 15, entry deadline June 5 .
  • B.A.A. 10K, Boston, MA, June 22, a limited number of self-paid entries are available, get in touch by  May 30.
  • Jim Kane Sugar Bowl 5K, South Boston, Thursday July 17, entry deadline July 9.
  • Marathon Sports 5 Miler,  Weston, Thursday July  24, entry deadline July 16.

 

OUTDOOR PRACTICES

Track practices have resumed on Tuesday  evenings at M.I.T. The workouts are geared towards those racing summer road races (5K to 10K), and focus on faster quality work rather than volume. These workouts will be a benefit to anyone, whether getting ready for a 5K or looking ahead to a Fall marathon.

As in the past, outdoor track workouts are conducted at the M.I.T. outdoor track at the at Steinbrenner Stadium, next to the Johnson Athletic Center, in Cambridge.

Meet at the outdoor track at 6:30 pm for a warm-up. Please note that if the MIT track team is practicing, warm-ups may not be conducted on the track, your cooperation is appreciated. Also note that other M.I.T. teams may be utilizing the infield for games or practices. Metered parking is available on Vassar Street. Parking is limited and no guarantee can be made on availability.

Note: Starting Times - 7:00pm on May 13 and 20, then starting at 6:30pm on May 27 to August 26, then back to 7:00pm until October 21

6-8 x 800 @ 15k pace w/ 90sec rest, 4-5min rest, 4-6 x 400 @ 5k pace w/ 1min rest

May 27 @ 6:30pm
5 x 1200m @ 10k pace w/ 2min rest, 4-5min rest, 1mile cutdown (increase the pace each lap from 10k - 5k)

June 3 @ 6:30pm
800m hard, 3-4min rest, 4 x mile @ 15k/10mile pace w/ 2min rest, 3-4min rest, 800m hard

June 10 @ 6:30pm
2-3 sets(1mile @ 15k pace, 2min rest, 4 x 400 @ 5k pace w/ 1min rest), 3min rest after set

June 17 @ 6:30pm

B.A.A. Moment 2

1935 John A. Kelley

Born in West Medford, Massachusetts as one of ten children, Kelley ran track and cross-country at Arlington High School in Massachusetts. He did not finish his first Boston Marathon in 1928, but eventually competed in a record 61 Boston Marathons. A legend of the marathon, Kelley won the 1935 and 1945 runnings of the Boston Marathon. He finished in second place at Boston a record seven times. Between 1934 to 1950, he finished in the top five 15 times at Boston, consistently running in the 2:30s. He ran his last full marathon at Boston in 1992 at the age of 84, his 61st start and 58th finish there.
