CAREER NOTES:
Kim Smith is New Zealand's greatest women's distance runner with numerous national records from 5-K up through the marathon.
She hopes to atone for her last appearance in Boston when injuries forced her to drop out of the Boston Marathon last April after she led through 18 miles of the race.
Although she has run in the 31 minute range for 10-K, Smith has run significantly faster for 10,000 meters on the track. In 2008 at Palo Alto, she set a PR of 30:35.54 as runner-up a few steps behind Shalane Flanagan.
At the Olympics that year she also cracked 31 minutes (30:51.00) placing ninth. She also represented New Zealand in the 2005, 2007 and 2009 World Championships.
If healthy she will be a force to be reckoned with, as she showed by winning the Mardi Gras Half-Marathon in March in 1:07:36, the fastest half-marathon ever run on US soil.
Smith resides in Providence where she went to college and was a four-time national champion over cross-country, indoor and outdoor track.
