Volunteering for the Boston Marathon

Thank you for your interest in the 2014 Boston Marathon.

For those of you who have volunteered before you know that by being a volunteer you'll get far more out of the experience than you put into it. While we understand you will most likely never forget your time volunteering, as a parting gift we present each volunteer with a Boston Marathon commemorative pin. Another exciting part of being a volunteer is wearing the Boston Marathon adidas volunteer jacket as you carry out your volunteer duties. While the volunteer jacket has a strict operational purpose and cannot be purchased, adidas proudly presents each volunteer with this beloved piece to be taken home and celebrated for years to come. Each volunteer over the age of 21 receives a complimentary ticket to the Post-Race Party, offering another way to share and celebrate your volunteer accomplishments with other members of the Boston Marathon community. Volunteers are also welcome and encouraged to attend the John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo at the Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center in Boston during race weekend.

Volunteer assignments are made based on volunteer history and job availability at the time you apply. About ninety-five percent of the volunteer jobs are filled by veteran volunteers and/or filled by local, returning groups (clubs, teams, family groups, etc) that have been with us for many years. The remaining five percent of the positions are filled on a first-come-first-serve basis. Please also note that we typically receive about 1,000 more applicants than we have assignments to fill. Selecting at least one job in Hopkinton when you fill out your application is a great way to increase your chances of being selected on your first year.

1996 - Centennial Boston Marathon

The historic centennial Boston Marathon in 1996 was monumental for many reasons. It was the not only the first time that the ChampionChip timing and scoring device was used in a major US Marathon, but it was the largest running event ever held at the time.

The starting field of 38,708 stood for more than seven years as the largest in the history of the sport. Included among the finishers were 16 Boston champions.
