Another chapter in Boston’s illustrious road running history was written on Sunday, October 14 as the inaugural running of the B.A.A. Half Marathon, presented by New England Baptist Hospital, drew 2,529 starters from 28 states to Frederick Law Olmsted’s Emerald Necklace park system.

Wayne Levy, of the host Boston Athletic Association, led a 1-2-3 club sweep of the men’s race and Sarah Nixon, of Medfield won the women’s open division championship. Tim Kelly, of Weymouth, and Jane Raymond-Hall, of Watertown, were victorious in the wheelchair division.

1972 - Women Official Entrants in Marathon

Although Bobbi Gibb was the first woman to complete the Boston Marathon in 1966, it was not until the 1972 Boston Marathon that women could become official entrants due to a change in AAU rules.
