The second Mayor’s Cup races took place following the official dedication of the Franklin Park course. This year’s race served as a preview to the U.S. National Championships, and Andrew Ball, of Nike Running Room, claimed victory in the men’s 5.9-kilometer race with a time of 17:49. Local favorite and former Northeastern University standout Brad Schlapak was runner-up in 18:01. Nike Boston’s Gwyn Coogan easily won the women’s title (5.9 kilometers) in 20:23, one minute, 34 seconds ahead of second place finisher Margaret Beardslee. Nike Boston Track Club sponsored the race.

1977 - Bob Hall Becomes the First Person to Complete the Race in a Wheelchair

Shown here in 1977, Bob Hall pioneered the division when he became the first person to complete the race in a wheelchair in 1975, making good on his promise to finish in under three hours.
