Registration procedure for the 2017 Boston Marathon regarding Athletes with Disabilities

Following registration for qualified runners, athletes with disabilities who meet designated qualifying standards (see below) will be able to register for the 2017 Boston Marathon. Registration for individuals who wish to participate in the 2017 Boston Marathon among the wheelchair division, visually-impaired division, and mobility impaired program (including Duo Teams*) will open on Monday, October 3, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. ET.

As of Thursday, December 15, mobility impaired (including duo teams) and hand-cycle registration is full. We will no longer be accepting applications for these categories for the 2017 Boston Marathon.

For athletes with disabilities, registration for the 2017 Boston Marathon will occur on a "rolling admission" schedule similar to the registration process for runners, beginning with the fastest from those who meet the requirements.

On Monday, October 3, eligible participants who have met the standard for their age and gender by 20 minutes or more may register. On Wednesday, October 5 at 10:00 a.m. ET, if space remains, registration will open for those who have met their qualifying standard by 10 minutes or more. If space remains, registration will open on Friday, October 7 at 10:00 a.m. ET for those who have met their qualifying standard by five minutes or more. Registration will close on Saturday, October 8 at 10:00 p.m. ET.

If space remains after the first week of registration (Monday, October 3 through Saturday, October 8), then registration will re-open for all eligible athletes with disabilities from Monday, October 10, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. ET through Friday, October 14, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. ET. As during the first week of registration, entry during this period (October 10 - 14) will not be first-come, first-served, and the fastest from among those who are eligible and who have met the qualification requirements among these submissions will be given entry as space allows.

If space remains within the various programs and divisions after this initial period, then on Monday, October 17 at 10:00 a.m. ET registration will reopen to anyone who meets the qualifying standards. Registration will remain open on a first-come, first-served basis until the maximum field size for each division or program is reached or until February 1, 2017 at which time no additional entries will be accepted. The last day that an entry will be accepted is February 1, 2017, even if the field has not reached its maximum field size.

For hand-cyclists, a random selection after registration will determine participants in the 2017 Boston Marathon. Individuals who use hand-cycles in sport and have completed the marathon distance with a valid qualified performance may submit their registration information. Men and women must meet the qualifying standards for their age and gender as posted for the Boston Marathon wheelchair division. Only athletes with disabilities may participate in hand-cycles at the Boston Marathon. For those who wish to participate in a hand-cycle, registration will begin on Monday, October 17 at 10:00 a.m. ET, and remain open through Thursday, October 20 at 5:00 p.m. ET.

The hand-cycle field will include six (6) participants chosen randomly from those who submitted their registration information in addition to a limited number of participating survivors from the Boston bombing community and disabled veterans. Those who are accepted through random selection, as well as those not accepted, will receive notification from the B.A.A. on Friday, October 28 via e-mail.

If the field of hand-cycle participants is not filled during October 2016 registration, then applicants may submit their registration information for consideration. Even if space remains open through the New Year, the last day that an entry will be accepted is February 1, 2017. That is, even if the field has not reached its maximum field size, no applicants will be accepted after February 1, 2017.

For the 2017 Boston Marathon, due to space and safety constraints, field size maximums have been established as follows:

  • Wheelchair Division: 70
  • Visually Impaired Division: 70
  • Mobility Impaired Program: 50
  • Duo Teams: 6
  • Hand-cycles: 30
