Abby Mac Foundation
PLEASE NOTE THAT ABBY MAC FOUNDATION IS NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THEIR 128TH BOSTON MARATHON TEAM.
The purpose of the Abby Mac Foundation is to promote inclusion for children with disabilities, particularly through sport and to raise awareness and support for children and their families with a mitochondrial disease.
The Abby Mac Foundation was founded in 2022 by the MacCurtain family to bring awareness about their daughter's rare terminal illness, Leigh’s Syndrome and to celebrate all of her amazing accomplishments as she participates in races with her dad, Greg. Abby is confined to a wheelchair and is non-verbal, but running provides her with the ability to compete and to be included in something she loves. Anyone who meets Abby immediately falls in love with her and her amazing smile. Abby has competed in several triathlons, marathons and local races. She has been racing with her dad since she was just five years old!
We recently partnered with author Todd Civin to publish a children’s book called, “Abby Mac’s Smile. Todd has written many books about children and adults with disabilities, including a book for the Hoyt family. We had an amazing relationship with Dick and Rick Hoyt and participated in many races over the years with them both.
The Abby Mac Foundation is thrilled to be an official charity of the Boston Athletic Association for the 2024 Boston Marathon. Our fundraising efforts will be used to sustain our charity for future events and to help provide adaptive equipment for future athletes who want to be included in the sport of running. A running chair can be a costly purchase for families ($5,000+) and we don't want that to stop them from being able to participate in races. We want to make sure that every disabled athlete has a chance to participate in every race.
If our mission resonates with you we would love to hear from you.
