B.A.A. Announces 2018 Boston Marathon Registration Dates

Registration Opens Monday, September 11, at 10:00 a.m. ET

BOSTON - Registration for the 2018 Boston Marathon will open on Monday, September 11, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. ET. The Boston Athletic Association will use the same process to register qualified runners as it has used in recent years, allowing the fastest qualifiers in their gender and age group to register first.

As runners assembled in Hopkinton for the 121st running of the Boston Marathon, it was the weather as much as the competition that was the focus of greatest conjecture. As the elite men toed the starting line, the mercury in Hopkinton hovered close to 65F with hardly a cloud in the sky.

Three days before the 121st Boston Marathon, Edna Kiplagat’s plan was to make a move in the last 5K of the race, not before.

Plans change. With a little more than 10K to go, the 37-year-old two-time IAAF World Champion was feeling good, so she threw in a 5:02 mile in the midst of the Newton Hills.

“I tried to work extra hard,” she said of the monster surge. “It worked for me.”

Returning to the B.A.A. Invitational Mile for the first time since 2014, two-time Olympic medalist Nick Willis was destined to earn his third win on the mile circuit in downtown Boston. Champion of both the 2013 and 2014 editions, Willis opted to kick off his season with the B.A.A. Invitational Mile, taking on a field that included top milers Daniel Winn, Cristian Soratos, and Will Leer. The race would not disappoint, with Willis prevailing in 4:13.2.

Under a cloudless blue sky “on the most gorgeous day ever,” Nicole Sifuentes was asked how she felt. “Terrible,” she said.

The two-time Olympian for Canada, a 1500-meter bronze medalist at the IAAF World Indoor Championships, couldn’t have been happier about it, having just broken the tape in 4:33.7 to win the B.A.A. Invitational Mile, eclipsing the course record in her first appearance here.

Molly Huddle is unable to keep the streak alive

Since 2014, Molly Huddle has owned the B.A.A. 5K, winning three years in a row and setting an American record in 2015. So when she went through the first mile of this flat-and-fast course in 4:46, leading the field, no one was surprised—not even Huddle.

Until she turned around.

“Everybody was still there,” said Huddle afterward. “So I was like, OK, it’s going to be a hard one today.”

B.A.A. Makes Contribution in Support of Martin’s Park

Boston’s newest park will be universally accessible for all children

BOSTON – The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced that a contribution of $20,000 will be donated to the construction of Martin’s Park at Children’s Wharf in honor of Martin W. Richard. The B.A.A., along with John Hancock Financial and the Producers of BOSTON, the first feature-length documentary chronicling the Boston Marathon, have pledged to support Martin’s Park, a universally accessible park and playground along the Fort Point Channel in South Boston.
